About this book

"Dwelling Place of Dragons" shares the writings of three Irishmen in what is a fascinating and insightful historical account of Ireland between 1830 and 1849. "The Harshaw Diaries" which inspired this work have been described as a "Real Irish Treasure." Based in Newry, Northern Ireland, this perceptive account of Ireland during the mid nineteenth century, boasts an engaging cast: James Harshaw, a local farmer, his nephew John Martin, a national political leader, and one of John's good friends George Henderson, the editor of the main Protestant newspaper in Newry, and Uncle to James Alexander Henderson, former Lord Mayor of Belfast and owner of the Belfast News-Letter. The period during which they lived and wrote was one of the most important in Irish history. Warning against the dangers of religious tyranny, the book begins with a remarkable peace conference in Newry in 1830, the goal of which was to put an end to sectarian violence. This effort died when the English government set about making changes to Irish governmental organization. Tensions between the religious communities in Ireland grew and the book ends with the largest sectarian battle of the 19th century.
