About
this book
When Collette is commissioned to
write a biography of her grandmother, Evangeline
Melville, a well-know pre-World War II Australian
children's writer, who spoke at rallies for the
unemployed and encouraged children to be proud to be
Australian early in the Nation's history, she immerses
herself in Eve's world to numb herself against her
husband's infidelity. The story is set in modern day
Sydney and the small country town of Claret in the
tumultuous times of the Great Depression and World War
II where Eve is the centre of a circle of left wing
writers and swagman poets. Despite her socialist
leanings and eccentric friends, the townsfolk regard
Eve as one of their own and how they interact shows
much about how Australia used to be. However, Colette
is haunted by one of her earliest memories of her
grandmother shooting at an unseen stranger through the
front door and as her research unravels the mystery,
Collette discovers her grandmother had a secret life.
